Welcome
to WIB Web Site!
WIB is an organisation of broadcasters
who work in public and private radio and TV stations in Ghana.
This
media advocacy group supports women and children's social and political
development and human rights.
Background
WIB
was formed in 1995 following national and global concerns over gender
imbalances in the mass media particularly the elctronic media. A
number senior editors who had attended several training prorammes
on gender and the media, came together to form WIB.
Our Philosophy
To
ensure that both men and women have equal access to the opportunties
that radio and televison offer. We believe affirmative action should
apply in the media sphere. For every five persons that participate
in radio or television programmes, two must be female.

Objectives
We
aim at enhancing access and participation of women and children
to radio and television. In this regard, we:
- We
work to change the negative representations and images of women
on television
- We
work to ensure a positive portrayal of women in the media
- We
work towards increasing women and children's participation in
national and local debate on radio and television.
Our
basic strategy is the rights-based approach. Apart from enhancing
acces of target group, we empower them to take advantage of their
right to free expression and protection against negative media practices
as contained in th Children's Act and the National Media Commission
on Broadcast Standards.
