The Historical Portrayal of Chicanos and Latinos in U.S. Popular Culture

Chicanos/Latinos have made an indelible mark on American culture. This course serves two major purposes. First, since the incorporation of Mexicans and other Latinos, U.S. popular culture has depicted them in multiple forms. These forms have ranged from the bandido image in Western films, the exotic and objectified Latina, to the more contemporary image of Latinos as immigrants and foreigners to their native land, in the U.S. Thus, part of History 327 will explore the history of Chicanos/Latinos in the U.S. and the origins of these popular and often negative portrayals of Mexicans and Latinos in popular culture. Second, History 327 will explore how Mexicans and Latinos responded to such images through the interrelationship between society, history, gender, class, ethnicity, sexuality, and religion as expressed through Chicano/Latino cultural forms to include music, theatre, film, visual art, and sports.
